With all the ingredients of a fast-paced thriller, Hughes reveals how a secret IRA unit planned and executed the celebrated helicopter escape from Mountjoy Jail in 1973 and carried out a series of audacious fundraising bank raids in the Republic. For the first time, he also tells the inside story of how the IRA planned its mass breakout from Portlaoise Prison in 1974.

  4. Kevin McGarry

Just finished your book 3.45am. A fabulous read and enlightened. Look into what the reality of life was and how we have evolved since then. I am reminded of the Kerry man’s saying that ‘the secret of life is to be content’.

  6. Matt McGeown

    Great read!

  7. Patrick Haran

This book falls into the ‘can’t put down category’. The book is a fast paced thriller which is rare to find in a non-fiction historically accurate piece of work. It reminds me of an Irish republican version of Goodfellas minus the self-enrichment. More please!

I was engrossed in this book. It gives a fascinating insight into Brendan Hughes time in the IRA. A great read which explains the sacrifices that Brendan made in order to live the life of a volunteer.

The book is totally captivating, I found myself unable to put the book down. Thank you Brendan for sharing your story with us all. Your bravery and courage in the face of such overwhelming odds were and still are to this day inspirational

Excellent book and superb telling of a story I knew very little about except for a quick mention on reeling in the years. Very interesting to see the meticulous planning that went into the operations and the roll fate can play. Highly recommended.

  16. Feargal McCrory

  19. Miceal O’Cleirigh

Haven’t manage to finish a book in six years and read this one in 2 days! Great book….

  20. Sandra Huckerby

An outstanding book, loved every minute of reading it and would welcome more like it.

A most absorbing, satisfying read. Wasn’t sure what it would be like reading 300 pages of bloody reminiscence when I picked it up but the tone is perfectly pitched. Strong but not sensationalist except when it needed to be. Characters were well depicted and not overblown. Got a sense of folk who stepped out of their everyday lives into a war and found they were up for it while being able to move between their different existences. Maybe that’s what guerillas do? Brendan found this calling for better or worse.

  22. Neil Byrne

Gripping from start to finish. Didn’t want to put it down or want it to end. The lengths that the volunteers went to in the struggle for freedom and equality for the people of Ireland will never be forgotten. Éire abu

Brilliant read . What a man what a shame how he was treated by the movement. I could relate to all the names . I remember when I heard about the portlaois break out I drove as fast as I could from Wexford to portlaoise to see if I could pick up any escaped prisoners just shows the passion a lot of people had at that time .

  26. Dermott Daly (verified owner)

Excellent read. Very well written book.

  27. Mike Lawson

An excellent, intriguing book. Very easy read, and the problem with this book is that I just read it way too fast. It kept my attention, and I couldn’t stop turning the pages. This is a great book chronicling a great victory for the IRA. However, the way Brendan Hughes was dressed down by the IRA was a shame. He’s a hero in my book.
